Action Thursday - 5 Action Steps to Break a Bad Habit

Every bad habit can be broken no matter how long you've been doing it. Whether it's a mental, physical or emotional habit you can break free to create habits that are more beneficial in your life. Using the following practical action steps can help you get closer to breaking the habit.

Action Step #1 - Identify your 'why' for breaking the bad habit

Write out a strong enough reason for kicking the habit. It should be something that you really want to achieve more than your will to keep the habit.

Action Step #2 - Set your intentions to break the habit

Make a firm decision that you will quit your habit even if you hear your mind saying back to you, "I'm not sure if I could actually do this because I've tried so many times before to stop and failed." This time let it be different. You are going to use different tools to help you.

Action Step #3 - Become conscious of your own habit behaviour triggers

Think about what triggers the habit. Is it stress, nervousness, fear, anger? As you consciously identify these triggers you can look for ways to either avoid them or deal with them differently.

Action Step #4 - Do something different

Once you identify your triggers, plan to do something different. Instead of engaging in the habit, do something different - perhaps listen to some music, hang out with some positive friends, read something uplifting or motivating. Brainstorm some ideas for your particular situation and let the will to achieve your goal push you forward to overcome the force of your habit.

Action Step #5 - Practice the new habit

Your bad habit got its grip on you because each day you practiced it making it a part of your internal programming. Now you need to reverse the process - practicing to not do the regular activity and change your behaviour to what you want to achieve.

And now you're invited to discover how you can break the bad mental habit of inferiority complex and low self-esteem. It is the negative habitual thinking that has kept you bound and now it's time to learn the tools to break free from inferiority complex and low self-esteem so you can build your self-confidence. Having Trouble Breaking a Bad Habit? Find Out How From a 6 Year Old - Part 3

We've covered 4 steps so far this week. Let's look at the last step to breaking a bad habit.

Step #5 - Change your strategy

When Alexandria realized that her method was not working, she was willing to change her strategy and apply the new way to achieve her goal.

If something's not working, there's no point to keep going on, on that path. Change your strategy. Adapt something new that has worked for someone else and apply it to your own life.

At the time Alexandria decided to quit her finger-sucking habit, her baby teeth came out and her adult teeth were getting ready to come in. Now she has beautiful straight teeth to go with her beautiful smile. She feels quite accomplished that she finally achieved her goal - beautiful teeth.

What habit are you struggling with? Are they mental - struggling with negative thinking, low self-esteem? Are they physical - nail biting, smoking, overeating? These methods work across board in all areas of your life. Try them and empower yourself from within. Thanks to Alexandria who's now over 7 years old.

Having Trouble Breaking a Bad Habit? Find Out How From a 6 Year Old - Part 2

Yesterday we covered 2 steps to breaking a bad habit. We'll look at 2 more steps today.

Step #1 - Reprogram the subconscious with repetition and persistence

The first few days after Alexandria announced her decision to quit her habit, she found her finger back in her mouth each time she awoke from sleep. But that did not stop her. She kept trying and she was persistent in spite of her internal subconscious programming.

She was rewriting her internal programming with the pen of persistent repetition. Each time she found her finger in her mouth she pulled it out and kept on trying.

Every thing we've ever mastered, whether good or bad, came as a result of persistent repetition. No matter what obstacles we faced initially, we broke through each one until we mastered the new habit. Remember the subconscious mind does not discriminate between a good habit and a bad habit. That's your job; the job of your conscious decision to keep doing a thing sends the message to the subconscious internal programming that sets the habit in place.

Step #2 - Ask for help from someone who's been there

She recognized that she needed help to overcome the habit so she stated what the problem was, "Mom, every time I try to stop, I wake up in the night and find my finger in my mouth." Knowing that I had the same habit as a child she was curious to know what I did to stop.

So I told her that I used to put my hand under my tummy to prevent me from sucking it and I told her that each time I found my finger in my mouth I would immediately take it out and kept practicing that over and over again. Armed with this information, Alexandria decided to try it. She kept practicing until finally she did it.

Sometimes we need to ask for help from someone who's been there and have come out successfully if we're struggling on our own. They may have ideas from their own experience that will save a lot of time and stress.

Look out tomorrow for another step to breaking a bad habit.

Having Trouble Breaking a Bad Habit? Find Out How From a 6 Year Old - Part 1

Trying to kick a bad habit but find yourself ending up right back where you started? Whether it's a physical or a mental habit you can follow these steps used by my daughter Alexandria when she was 6 years old to quit her finger-sucking habit.

Step #1 - Set your intentions

Alexandria wanted to stop sucking her finger and she made a firm decision that she was going to quit. She knew what she wanted and set her intentions to achieve her goal.

Mentally setting your intentions with a firm decision is the first step before physical achievement. It is the decision-making process that moves the universal power in action on your behalf to bring all you need to accomplish your goal.

Step #2 - Have a strong enough 'Why'

Alexandria wanted to quit her finger-sucking habit because she did not want to disfigure her teeth. When we told here that her finger was preventing her teeth from growing properly, she made her decision to stop sucking it.

When your 'why', your reason for wanting to achieve any goal, to quit any habit becomes stronger than the will to keep the habit, you will break through any barriers no matter how long it takes or how many attempts you need to make in order to succeed. Your 'why' must be stronger than your habitual mental or physical addiction.

Watch out tomorrow for 2 more steps to breaking a bad habit.
